Microsoft has Acquired Minecraft For $2.5 Billion.

Microsoft has confirmed that Mojang and Minecraft will join its ranks, but will continue to make the game available across iOS, Android and PlayStation as well as on Xbox and PC The company announced today. Microsoft claims that they began discussions about making the game available on the Xbox console and then saw their huge success and decided to make the acquisition to "diversify its game collection."

The team announced that Markus "Notch" Persson and Carl Manneh, founders of Mojang, have resigned from the company after the acquisition. Mojang's official website confirmed that the purchase cost was $2.5 billion. In their post, the Mojang community team says that Notch did not want to be a part of the world's most influential company, and prefers to focus on smaller projects. The decision was made to allow Minecraft to continue growing while allowing the founding team to pursue other interests.

Mojang has not provided any assurances as to the future plans for Minecraft however it has stated that it will continue its business as usual. Microsoft says it "respect[sthe brand and independent spirit" of Minecraft and will continue with projects like MINECON which is the annual event dedicated to the game that was launched by Mojang in the year 2010.

The community reaction to this announcement will be mixed. Minecraft fans who have been playing the game since it was first introduced will likely be skeptical of the new owners of the company. However, the reasoning behind the purchase is solid. At the very minimum, we'll get the chance to test what happens if Notch can replicate the success of the next generation's Lego similar game.

Here are Notch's thoughts about the deal and his decision to leave the company he created. This is from his blog, which had crashed at the time the article was written. :

Mojang has left me.

A relatively long time ago, I decided to quit Minecraft development. Jens was the ideal person to lead it, and I wanted new ideas. At first I failed when I tried to create something massive again however, since I've decided to just stick to small prototypes and interesting challenges, I've had so much pleasure at work. Although I wasn't sure where I fit in Mojang, where people actually work, I was told that I was important to the culture and I decided to stay.

I was at home with a cold a few weeks ago when the internet went wild with rage against me due to an EULA situation that I had nothing to deal with. i'm the great wizard I was confused. I didn't understand. I tweeted about this in anger. Then, I watched the This is Phil Fish video on YouTube and started to realize I did not have the connection with my fans I believed I had. I've become an image. I don’t want to be a symbol. I don't want to be accountable for something I don't understand. That I don't want to do anything about. I'm not an entrepreneur. I'm not an executive chief. I'm a geeky computer programer who enjoys sharing opinions on Twitter.

When the deal is completed and I'm done, I'll be leaving Mojang and will return to web experiments and Ludum Dares. If I ever accidentally make something that is gaining momentum, I'll probably end the project immediately.

Given my public image, which is already a bit distorted by me, I don’t expect to be in a position to ignore negative comments however, at least I won’t be compelled to look them up.

I'm aware of this going against the majority of what I've stated in public. I don't have a good answer to this. I'm also aware that a lot of you were using me as a symbol of some perceived struggle. I'm not. I'm a person , and I'm right there with you.

I love you. You're incredible. Thank you for turning Minecraft into what it has become however, there are too many of you and I'm not the sole person to be responsible for something this massive. It is Microsoft's property now in one sense. In a larger sense, it's been a part of all of you for a long time and that's not going to change.

It's not about the money. It's about my mental health.
