British Museum to be digitally recreated in Minecraft By Joe Miller Technology Reporter
23 September 2014
The British Museum in London - complete with all its exhibits - is to be recreated in the video game Minecraft.
This project is part of the Museum of the Future program that aims to increase the attraction of the museum.
Many real-life organisations have created maps in the Minecraft universe such as Ordnance Survey and the Danish government, which aims to make children aware of their work.
Last week, Minecraft was purchased by Microsoft for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).
A spokeswoman for the museum stressed that the project was at "an initial stage of planning" and that the "build" had not yet started.
She added that the organisation is planning to recruit members of the public to assist with the "construction".

The British Museum
The first public museum of nationality in the world, founded in 1753
The most visited tourist attraction in the UK.
Nearly six million people visit the museum every year. The museum holds eight million items.
Its natural history collections were moved to a new building in South Kensington in the 1880s which would become the Natural History Museum
Its instantly recognized Great Court, designed by Lord Foster is the biggest covered public space in Europe
One employee of the British Museum posted details about the project on Reddit and requested volunteers.
He received enthusiastic responses from Minecraft fans across the all over the world.
Initial stages
Digitally creating the Great Court, facade and interior of the building is the first step in the process.
The institution hopes that this stage will be in time for a public debate entitled the changing public dialogues of museum collections in the digital age. The debate will take on the 16th of October.
Ovum's Ovum gaming analyst Ed Barton told the BBC that the British Museum's shift towards Minecraft will make it "perceived as something that is fun" and also serve as an educational tool for a young public.
He added, "It's the digital version of building the British Museum using Lego." "You have to build it brick by brick".
He said that the institution should be commended for crowdsourcing the project "as this turns it into something that is collaborative" and will further inspire young Minecraft fans.
"What a cool project it could be to be asked to build the Elgin Marbles in Minecraft," he said.
Anyone who is interested in donating to the British Museum's work can sign up on Reddit.
