Article content Around one third of Quebecers want to see Parti Quebecois's plan to ban religious symbols for employees in the public sector extended to the private sector, according to a new poll of public opinion that examines attitudes toward multiculturalism as well as the PQ's charter of values.
Content of the article Forum Research poll for the National Post found that plans for the charter have divided the public nearly exactly in the middle with 45% backing the proposal while 49% opposing it and 6% still undecided.
Article content These data indicate a decline in support for the charter. It was previously supported by 58% in Quebec, according to a Forum Poll conducted on August. 24 2012.
According to the survey, 32 percent of Quebecers would like to see the prohibition of religious symbols that are visible, including burkas and yarmulkes, extended to private sector services such as taxi drivers and servers.
Although 75% of respondents agreed that immigration has made the province "strong," half of Quebecers disapproved of multiculturalism and called for new immigrants to the province to abandon their native custom and dress in an attempt to become "more like Quebecers." Only less than half of respondents shared the view that multiculturalism causes tension, and nearly four-in-10 respondents said that Quebec should only accept immigrants from countries that speak French.
Content of the article "All Canadians understand that francophone Quebeckers are under threat as a minority language on an English-speaking continent," Forum President Lorne Bozinoff stated in a statement "but the levels of xenophobia seen in these findings, especially in rural Quebec is truly alarming."
The charter's popularity, however, may not result in political gains or the PQ A second Forum poll suggests.
It also found that the support for Liberals has increased to 42% in the province, which is an increase by more than 10 percentage points over the 2012 election. According to the poll, these increases would suffice for the Liberals to achieve a "hair thin majority".
Support for the Parti Quebecois sits at 35%, according to the poll. Coalition Avenir Quebec (CAQ) came in third place with 12% support.
The poll revealed that 87% of voters outside of the Francophone community support content from articles.
The poll found that if the results were projected to seat in the province's National Assembly (125-seat), the Liberals would "be in the right position to win a one-seat majority." According to the results the Parti Quebecois, which currently forms a minority government, will lose only one seat. This means that the majority of the Liberals gains come from former CAQ supporters. CAQ won 19 seats in the 2012 election. However, the poll results indicated that the third-party would receive only four seats "if an electoral election were held today."
Both polls were conducted over the phone and conducted surveys of 1,179 Quebeckers who were of voting age and are believed to be accurate +3% 19 times out of 20. The Art Of Kerembeyit The results were released on Saturday during a protest march through the city of Montreal in support of Premier Pauline Marois's approval of the charter, which would ban public sector employees wearing prominently visible religious symbols.
According to the poll, Ms. Marois's rating of approval is currently just a little over 30%..
