How do you spawn?

Axolotls were originally said to spawn in one of the latest cave biomes, Lush Caves. However, since the new biomes aren't arriving in Minecraft until the end of the year, where can we find these fun fish?



Axolotls can currently spawn in any underground water source in the event that it is completely dark and below sea level (y63). This guide will be updated to reflect the latest update 1.18 biomes to reflect any future changes in spawning. But, this is how you are still able to find axolotls.

Axolotls can't be controlled legally however they're not hostile towards players and can be scooped up into a bucket with ease. You can then carry them around with you, or place them in a pond or lake nearer to where you live.



If you don't have one, you can attach an axeolotl lead to it. However, it will die if the level of water is higher than five minutes.



How to breed



How to breed axolotl in Minecraft



Axolotls can also be bred with buckets of tropical fish. Once you have two adult axolotls feed them both with the tropical fish. You should see red hearts signalling that they've entered 'love mode'. How sweet.



The resulting baby axolotl will take on the color of one of its parents randomly and take 20 in-game minutes to reach maturity. You can speed up this process by using more exotic fish.

Blue


The blue axolotl which is one of the rarest colours and has a 0.083% chance to spawn either naturally or through the breeding of adult axolotls with other colors. If you've got your heart set on blue axolotl you'll need patience and more luck than normal.



What they consume?



What do axolotls consume?



Axolotls consume tropical fish, which are usually found in ocean biomes. If you want to feed an axolotl you'll need to use a bucket of tropical fish, not one that you've already caught.



Since tropical fish tend to scare easily, they can be quite difficult to capture in a bucket, and therefore patience is essential. If you're not sure, check to find out whether the Wandering Trader has a bucket of tropical fish available for sale.



Combat



Are axolotls able to attack other mobs with their axes?



Although these adorable creatures aren't hostile to players, they'll not hesitate to take on sea-based predators. They'll leave turtles and dolphins in peace however, they'll be ready to take on any other threat.



They also have a neat defense mechanism: If an Axolotl suffers damage when underwater, it will play dead and gain Regeneration. The Regeneration status effect may be transferred to a player when they kill a mob the which the axolotl was fighting.
