September NPD: Grand Theft Auto 5 Sales Infuse Industry with Growth [UpdateSeptember NPD: Grand Theft Auto 5 Sales Boost Industry

Good news, everyone! The NPD Group reports that the video game industry's performance in the retail sector was up 27 percent year-over year for the month of September: $1.07 billion this year against $848 million in the previous year.

As expected, the majority of the industry's increased revenues was derived from the software segment which is also known as "where all the Grand Theft Auto 5 cash lives." New physical sales of console and portable games during September totaled at $754.3 million, a 52 percent increase over the $497.5 million that was earned in the same period the previous year. GTA 5 understandably tops the list of September's 10 best-selling games and is followed by Madden NFL 25 and NBA 2k14.

The period's hardware sales brought in $183.2million thirteen percent less than the September 2012 numbers. The Nintendo 3DS was the fifth month as the most-seller product in the category, while Wii U sales increased "more than 200 percent" over August, but Nintendo did not provide specific figures for how many Wii U boxes that works out to.

In addition, the PlayStation 3 broke the Xbox 360's streak of long-running and was the best-selling console at the time in large part due to the available Grand Theft Auto 5 bundle as per NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan.

The Accessories segment, which includes gift cards, digital currency vouchers, Skylanders/Disney's Infinity figures, as well as other products, was basically unchanged year-over-year, with only a 2 percent increase in sales, which came to $142.3 million.

Update: Microsoft has commented, noting that the company sold 80 million Xbox 360s to retailers worldwide in September. The console's sales totaled $401.2 million. In the absence of a way to state that the Xbox 360 was the No. Microsoft claims that the Xbox 360 is still the #1 selling console in the US. Team, clever phrasing
