Article content Similar to schools across the world, public schools in Coquitlam, B.C., could not have predicted the outbreak.
Article content But the B.C. municipal schools were probably better equipped than the majority of schools to deal with the challenges that COVID-19 presented to learning.
It is in large part due to its partnership Microsoft. minecraft server list This partnership provides the use of Microsoft's suite of cloud-based educational, interactive, and interactive tools that enhance learning in the classroom.
Stephen Whiffin, chief information officer and director of instruction for the Coquitlam School district, says there has been a broad movement to adopt technology in schools across Canada for a while.
Since a few yearsago, the goal was to utilize technology to enhance learning for the district's 30,000 diverse students.
"We'd been focused for some time on implementing Microsoft 365 Education because it provides a set of tools that a majority of people are already familiar with."
He notes that Microsoft's familiarity is essential for educators and students to be able to swiftly use the software. As such, when the pandemic struck, the school district was able to swiftly transition to the virtual, at-home-learning format.
"All of our teachers had laptops, laptops, and computers that used Microsoft software and we had an IT infrastructure - also backed by Microsoft ready to facilitate this rapid shift," says Whiffin.
The school board purchased new hardware and devices that run on the latest cloud-based Windows 10 operating systems. This allows for seamless synching with Microsoft 365 Education tools. Microsoft also offers IT management tools that let administrators manage connected devices networks, networks, and other resources.
Article content It also offers its own Surface brand of touchscreen tablet/laptop/desktop hybrids for exceptional performance in educational settings, with affordable to premium price points.
Microsoft's education tools are based on Office 365, the most frequently used software for business globally. In collaboration with school boards, Microsoft offers a free version of its educational software to teachers and students across Canada. This provides access to powerful tools like Teams, PowerPoint, Excel and Word on their personal devices to help them learn, as well as access to Minecraft Education Edition. Students and parents can also access accessories specifically designed for the classroom.
Whiffin says that Microsoft Teams, a core communication tool within the M365 suite, includes special plug-ins to support education. This allows remote learning and working from the classroom.
In addition, Microsoft's education program includes applications such as OneNote Class Notebooks, which lets teachers easily create virtual spaces for individual, group, one-on-one and classroom activities.
However, it's more than just software. As Whiffin adds, Microsoft provides the total package, which is crucial in an age where learning is increasingly moving beyond the boundaries of the classroom.
"All resources must be aligned, not only for learning, but also to provide the infrastructure that supports learning in the classroom and at home.
Article content All Microsoft 365 Education Tools are secured with the highest level of security and privacy features, Whiffin says.
"That was crucial for parents and teachers to be sure that they were sure that their students would be secure using them," he says. "Without this trust it would have been a lot more difficult to successfully implement these tools in our classroom."
While Microsoft's 365 Education suite proved its value in remote learning during the outbreak The most compelling proof of its transformative power is that students and teachers have continued to utilize the suite after returning to in-person learning.
"That's an affirmation of the quality of the experience and the efficacy of tools for enhancing education," he adds.
The key to the Coquitlam school district's success is Microsoft's unifying platform which addresses all the needs of students, educators and other support staff.
"The benefit lies in the fact that Microsoft 365 Education provides one set of tools to do A to Z when it comes to the learning experience," says Whiffin, whether it's processing numbers in Excel creating an presentation in PowerPoint or chatting in real time on Teams.
