After you've Installed NetBSD

Clara and I run Minecraft on our home FreeBSD server in a jail that keeps Java and other dependencies contained in a single location. While I haven't tried it, the idea is that it is possible to run the server in any location that Java is supported, including Linux, NetBSD and possibly other operating systems.

I couldn't let go of it! The good news is, you can actually run an Minecraft server on my other favorite OS too. This article explains the method I used, though I'm sure there are other options.

Getting Java installed

After you have installed NetBSD and configure networking and enable the pkgin option, you will require OpenJDK installed to run Minecraft.

Minecraft 1.17 and up requires OpenJDK 17 however, OpenJDK 16 is the most recent version in the most current snapshot as of July 2022. To confirm, search:

If it's not yet 16, you can pull current packages by opening your repo file:

And changing the repo URL In my case, 9.0 to 9.0_current

Thank you so much to the Ryoon@ for his work on this. He has done a lot of great work for the NetBSD community, I think I owe him at least an espresso or a drink next time I'm fortunate enough to visit Japan.

Now we can install, along with other useful tools:

Running Minecraft

From here, running Minecraft is similar to any other Java-enabled server. I have all my files in one location:

Log in as my local user and start:

We can now start!

You'll notice that Java will throw an error that states "system not supported, which those of us using NetBSD know well. It's safe to ignore according to my tests.

After you have run the server for the first time, remember to sign the EULA.
minecraft

Making an introductory script

I like to symlink to minecraft.jar the most current version of the server

Then refer to it in launch.sh with tmux in order to save the server after disconnecting. I also prefer to give Minecraft more memory:

We're now ready for the adventure!

Follow-up

Next, I would like to build a Chroot environment that can support Java and Minecraft. This is similar to the FreeBSD jails. I have an NetBSD chroot exploration article in the works for many years. I'll clean it up and post it in the near future.
