Experience a 3D-lifestyle. This is the challenge that inspiring New Zealand leaders put to the crowd of more than 2,000 primary and intermediate students from 147 schools at the National Young Leaders Day (NYLD) which was held at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau earlier in the day.
Students heard from Silver Fern and Northern Mystics player Laura Langman, athlete and Carabiner Mentoring Programme founder Cam Calkoen Adventurer and presenter of TV One's First Crossings series Jamie Fitzgerald, chief executive of The Mind Lab Frances Valintine and Attitude Programmes for Schools presenter Charlie Laumatia.
NYLD events this year challenge students to live a 3-D experience by imagining, daring and building their leadership capabilities.
"Just as the way a 3D film that explodes off the screen, an 3D life is so much superior to a boring flat one," NYLD manager Annette Fale says.
"Imagine what your life could look like. Follow that dream. Be brave and do the daring and terrifying things that make life exciting. Your strengths are your biggest assets. There's a lot more to you than you know. There is no way to live a great life without courage, vision and work," students were taught.
Frances Valintine was the driving factor behind Media Design School. In 2013 she opened The Mind Lab in Newmarket - a facility dedicated to teaching robotics, electronics programming, filmmaking animation, and science technology to children from 4 to 15 years old.
Frances called on the leaders of tomorrow to be ready to face a changing world.
"To prepare for the future, you have to open your mind - curiosity will be your biggest strength not technology, and not how well you play Minecraft but curiosity and discovery," Frances said, as students wrote notes in their notebooks.
"Wake up in the morning and ponder what I can do to do things differently or make things better?"
The day was inspirational and entertaining. A performance by The Laughing Samoans, interactive games and 3D video clips were highlights of the day.
Since 2001, over 90,000 New Zealand students have attended the National Young Leaders Day. The events are held every year in Auckland, Wellington, Palmerston North, Rotorua, Christchurch and Dunedin.
