World of Warcraft to get fifth expansion

Blizzard has announced the fifth expansion of its flagship World of Warcraft (WoW) online game.



The game is dubbed the Warlords of Draenor it adds a new world to the game. It allows players to establish settlements and immediately boost the level of a character.



This announcement comes in the midst of WoW player counts have reached a five year low and Blizzard starts to group players on a smaller number of servers.



Blizzard also announced plans for Heroes of the Storm, a new game.



Small audience



At the annual Blizzcon gaming convention, details regarding Warlords in Draenor were revealed. The expansion involves a time-travelling storyline that allows players to replay some of the events that occurred in the series of Warcraft strategy games that were prior to WoW.



The expansion is set in the world of Draenor and provides players with the opportunity to explore new dungeons, zones, and other instances to play. Warlords allows players to play at the level of 100, adds garrisons to player settlements, and updates the appearance of a few of the game’s races.



Blizzard announced that players of Warlords could boost one character to level 90, allowing them to instantly begin exploring the world of the expansion. There is no release date for Warlords has been announced yet.



The news comes just days after Blizzard announced that the number of subscribers for WoW have dropped to 7.7 million. They were at their lowest point in 2007 and are currently significantly lower than the 2010 peak of 12 million.



To combat this decline, Blizzard has introduced a system that lets players play on multiple servers to ensure the game's economy, Player-versus-Player areas and arena battle systems have enough players participating to keep them functioning.



Writing on the Rock Paper Shotgun game news site, Nathan Grayson described Warlords of Draenor as a "decent expansion" but said the decision to revisit Warcraft's past was "puzzling".



He wrote, "This is maintenance in an aspect." "Something to keep players interested and happy. And who knows? Perhaps a smaller number of players will allow WoW to focus more effectively in the long-term.



Blizzcon saw the debut of Heroes of the Storm, a new game. It is an arena-based hero brawler game that lets players take control of important characters from nearly every game Blizzard creates, including Starcraft and Diablo. The heroes form teams and fight to be the best on a variety of maps.



A beta test of Heroes is currently in progress and Blizzard confirmed that the final game would be released "soonish".
