It shouldn't come as a surprise that children are spending more time playing on their phones during the COVID-19 pandemic. How do you know if they're balancing remote education with social media, gaming, and Fortnite? That's where Microsoft's new Family Safety app comes in. The announcement in March about the free program was made public and is now accessible to download by anyone who has an Android or iOS device.
The app allows you to set custom time limits for specific Android, Windows and Xbox applications, such as games with video like Minecraft. If a child asks for an extension, you have the option of extending their time limit by 15 or 30 minutes, and one two or three hours. The Family Safety app can also be set up to send an email each time they wish to purchase something from the Microsoft Store, and set up various web and search filters within the (now Chromium-based) Edge browser.
If you're looking to keep tabs on your little one the app can be set up to send a weekly 'activity report' email that divides their screen time based on device and application. The idea is to inform you that there's a problem and also have a conversation with your loved one. The app also provides tracking of your location, which allows you to track exactly where your family members are located in real life. MINECRAFT Microsoft 365 Family subscribers will be able receive notifications whenever a family member leaves or enters a specific location in the future. The premium plan will also include some form of habit tracking to ensure driving safety, beginning in the US, Canada and Australia.
These tools aren't particularly innovative and will be of no benefit to your family members if they spend most of their time on iPads, iPhones, and iPads. This could be a good monitor or even a primary option to ensure that everyone is living a healthy lifestyle online and offline.
