Good news, everyone! According to the NPD Group, the videogame industry's performance in physical retail increased by 27 percent over the course of September. $1.07 Billion, compared to $848 million last year.
As one would expect, the majority of the increased revenue came primarily from the software segment which is also known as "where all the Grand Theft Auto 5 cash lives." New physical sales of console and portable software during September totaled at $754.3 million, which is a 52 percent increase over the $497.5 million that was earned in the same period last year. GTA 5 understandably tops the list of the top 10 September-selling games and is followed by Madden NFL 25 and NBA 2k14.
The hardware sales for the month brought in $183.2million which is 13 percent lower than the September 2012 figures. The Nintendo 3DS was the most popular product in the segment for five months. Wii U sales increased more than 200 percent over August. However, Nintendo did not provide any figures on the number of Wii U boxes this translates to.
In addition, the PlayStation 3 broke the Xbox 360's record-breaking streak and was the best-selling console at the time, largely thanks to the system's available Grand Theft Auto 5 bundle as per NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan.
The Accessories segment, which includes gift cards and digital currency vouchers, Skylanders/Disney Infinity figures, and other products, was basically unchanged year-over-year, with only an increase of 2 percent in sales to $142.3 million.
Another day another cube
Update: Microsoft has chimed in saying that it made 80 million sales to retailers of Xbox 360 worldwide in September with console sales reaching $401.2 million. The Xbox 360 was the No. one selling console in the month of March, Microsoft instead says that it was the most popular console in the US in 2013. Team, clever phrasing
