Minecraft Player Spends two Years Building a Virtual City

Minecraft player works for two years building virtual city by Zoe Kleinman Technology reporter, BBC News

17 October 2014

A Delaware student spent two years creating a virtual world that was named Titan City in Minecraft.

Titan City is made up of 4.5 million Minecraft building blocks and contains 96 buildings.

Duncan Parcells claims it took the project two years to complete and that he spends up to five hours per week working on the project.

The first building he built was a virtual replica the World Trade Center. It took 18 months to complete.

The 19-year-old however believes that Titan City is not a realistic New York model.

He told the BBC, "It's inspired New York."

"A majority of people believe that it's a pastime, but it isn't."

He constructed the city using the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft but has now moved it to the PC version that is said to offer more construction possibilities.

Mr. Parcells plans to add an airport and a sports stadium.

"I believe it's an outlet for energy and architecture," he said.

"I've always loved architecture. I am particularly happy with Victorian-style buildings that are more traditional and less art deco.

"A majority of people stop by and want to stroll around and explore or help in the construction. Many of them help to create roads.

Although Titan City has been welcomed by the public with open arms, Mr Parcells stated that he has kept his virtual world separate from his actual life.

He said, "I've kept this under the radar for a while. It's kinda like a second existence I'm not able to talk about but people are starting to find out."

"My parents believe it's cool. I'm guessing they're just happy I don't do it too much."

Microsoft recently signed an agreement to purchase Minecraft Studio Mojang for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

The game logged its 100 millionth player in February 2014, its creator Markus Persson, aka Notch announced on Twitter.

After the initial purchase of the game Minecraft is completely free to play however there are in-game purchases available.

The game is played in a virtual world made up of cubes made of various materials. A majority of these materials can be used to construct blocks, and some can be made into usable raw materials such as iron, wood and diamond.

Playing the game involves surviving by using blocks to construct shelters and turning the raw materials and their combinations into objects (swords, armour, bows) to kill the game's numerous monsters.
