Dundee Pupils Redesign City Waterfront Using Minecraft

Dundee students design city waterfront using Minecraft

5 June 2015

Dundee school students have created their plans for the future of the city's waterfront, through the medium of Minecraft.

Primary school students have used the game for a few months to plan for the region that is currently undergoing an PS1bn renewal.

Dundee City Council and University of Dundee led the project.

The plans were judged on the style of the design and the support for tourism, education and the creation of jobs.

In addition to the Minecraft Youth Camp which involves primary 6 and seven pupils from across the city students from nine secondary schools have taken part in similar Minecraft Youth Camp, funded by the university and TAYplan.

The students worked in groups with Playstation and XBox consoles. MINECRAFTSERVERS They were connected to whiteboards in the classrooms and utilized them to reimagine and build their visions of the city's waterfront.

'Hugely enthusiastic'

Derek Robertson, Dundee University's school for education, said that the game was an "huge phenomenon" that enticed children.

He said: "We need to understand the digital spaces that children inhabit and how they in their learning.

"If we are looking to engage children in subjects like environmental design and design, then games and applications like this can be a great tool.

"The children we have been working with over the past few months have been hugely enthusiastic and have created some amazing work. Some of it could be a challenge for the city planners, but this is the beauty of Minecraft that they can make anything."

Mr. Robertson was recently invited along with 49 other teachers from around the world to take part in a Minecraft Educators Summit in Los Angeles, to discuss how Minecraft can be best used in formal and informal learning.
