Minecraft Developer Mojang won't Allow NFTs And Blockchain Tech

The company posted a blog post titled "Minecraft and NFTs" and acknowledged that some creators and companies have begun to launch NFT projects associated with Minecraft world files and skin packs. The post also suggested Minecraft creators may make use of the game as a platform to develop and sell collectible NFTs that players could earn by doing activities on a Minecraft server or as a reward for activities in the real world.

Mojang stated in the post that blockchain technologies are not allowed to be integrated into Minecraft client and server applications. They also can't be used to create NFTs associated to any in-game content including worlds and skins.

"We will be watching closely how blockchain technology develops over time to ensure that these principles are not violated, and to determine if it can provide safer gaming experiences and other more inclusive and practical games," the company stated. "However we don't have any plans to integrate blockchain technology into Minecraft right now."

The traditional game industry has begun to disengage itself from NFTs over the past few months, following a backlash from gamers and a crashing crypto market. Sony announced last week that it would launch an online collectibles feature within its new PlayStation Rewards program. However, Sony clarified emphatically that its collectibles are "definitely not NFTs." Ubisoft was the first major game publisher, to experiment with NFTs in the fall of last year, ended its trial after just four months. In October of last year, Steam marketplace owner Valve stated that it would not allow any games that use blockchain or NFT technology, though Fortnite creator Epic Games recently opened the doors to these products on its PC game store.

Microsoft hasn't provided a clear opinion on the matter as it relates to its library of gaming properties prior to now. But Xbox chief and Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer told Protocol in the past year that he was "leery" of the "near-term type of hysteria about NFTs" and the potential for scams, fraud and the pyramid scheme character of the crypto market leading to consumers losing vast sums of money in a short time. Spencer stated to Axios in the fall of 2017 that NFTs could be exploitative and that there were "a many things that probably will not be in your store."

Mojang's blog article echoes similar opinions. "Each of these uses of NFTs and other blockchain technologies result in digital ownership built on exclusion and scarcity which is not in alignment with Minecraft values of inclusion and creativity and playing together," the company wrote. Minecraft servers "NFTs are not inclusive of our community and create a semblance of the haves and the have-nots.
