This research highlighted RF heating as a potentially effective method of heating the formation. In a later study, Bottazzi et al. (2013) examined the effectiveness of heating with electricity in the downhole condition.


Both of these methods are suitable to heat organic matter. The method one is to place a material in a high-frequency electromagnetic field. The second method involves placing an object in the electromagnetic field that is an inductor. The electromagnetic field creates electric currents within the material, which heats up the object. How much heat is that is generated depends on the resistance of the material to the flow of the currents and the length of the exposure.

Although the biological effects of RF EMFs aren't conclusive, studies have revealed an association between exposure to EMF from RF in conjunction with EHS symptoms. This relationship requires further study to understand if EMF exposure is the cause of EHS. It has been shown that childhood leukemia is associated with the proximity of homes to power lines.

RF EMR is comprised of two parts namely magnetic and electric. The two components work together to produce an electromagnetic field with various strengths. The intensity of the field is measured using specific units. For instance, the electric fields strength may be determined in the form of volts per square millimeter. The magnetic field strength can be measured in milliwatts per square centimeter, and the total magnetic field strength can be measured as power density.

The non-ionizing version of EMF has less frequency, which means it is unable to cause chemical bond breakage. However, ionizing radiation has the ability to damage chemical bonds and cause oxidative damage in the body. Furthermore, it could cause skin changes and tumors in some individuals. Consequently, high levels of exposure could cause long-term health problems.

The research that proves how exposure to RF EMF may cause EHS isn't extensive. However, there are many other studies that show this connection with RF EMF and oxidative stress. While it's unclear what the duration of EMF exposure may cause cell damage, it is important to know what's happening within the body to prevent this type of problem. EMF exposure can even impact the function of organs.

The heating effect of RF EMF is caused by the polarity of the substances. If the RF energy flows through a compound that is polar nuclei of the atomic structure and electrons in the nuclei are moved away from their equilibrium positions. In the process, the electrons around the nuclei are dipoles that are induced. The dipole realignment happens hundreds of times per second. In this process there is friction between the rotating molecules and heat is created throughout the entire volume of the material.

While RF radiation does not directly damage DNA, it can cause heat to accumulate within body tissues that could cause burns or tissue damage. Unlike ionizing radiation, RF radiation isn't believed to cause cancer. However, some studies show increased tumor rates in laboratory animal models exposed to RF radiation.

There are many federal agencies that are involved in regulating and monitoring the impacts from RF radiation on human bodies. This includes those of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Food and Drug Administration, and the OSHA. They track RF exposure to ensure that it is safe for employees. They also advise employees to reduce their exposure when working in high-frequency RF environments.
