Minecraft was used to teach children molecular chemical
5 November 2015
Virtual world-building game Minecraft is played by tens of millions of kids around the world could be utilized in schools to help teach students chemistry.
A group of Hull University students created an educational version of the game that lets players discover specially-designed molecular structures, and to understand chemistry.
The aim is to engage young scientists in a fun and engaging way.

Minecraft players make use of building blocks to create structures and landscapes.
They are encouraged to look for treasures and other things.
'Fiendishly difficult'
Joel Mills, a Minecraft expert at the university, and Dr Mark Lorch, a senior lecturer in the field of biological chemical chemistry, helped the students create the project.
Dr Lorch said: "Minecraft is a fabulous tool to explore the structures of landscapes, buildings, and even anatomy.
"So why not molecules? We demonstrated it to a class of children the other day, and there were a lot of wows and gasps.
"This is a great way to grab their interest. It's a truly innovative method of engaging them and delivering information to them."
Students have created many other delights for children to explore and explore, aside from structures and molecules.
Dr. Lorch said that you could simply look around the molecules and read the details. There are also many treasure chests scattered about with books, puzzles, and goodies.
"Some are easy to locate while others are incredibly difficult to find. If you locate them all , you'll likely have learned a fair bit of chemistry along the way."
Outreach
Dr Lorch also has a role in engaging young people in science. She said: "If they see this information in a Minecraft environment and are shown how to access it, then they are more likely to visit the website to look it up."
The Hull team is currently testing the game, MolCraft, in secondary schools in London as part a variety of outreach projects for universities.
But it can be utilized in primary schools to teach basic science, such as how atoms come together to form molecules.
It is also available on Minecraft's educational library , which includes versions for both pupils and teachers.
This isn't the first time Minecraft has been used for engaging children in science-related topics.
A whole world has been built to teach quantum physics. Many schools in Northern Ireland have adapted it to encourage writing and creativity and to engage young people in city planning.
