It is based on the exact principle that Moire slit animations. This illusion is created by overlapping lines. The lines cover different areas of an object, and are then combined with specially designed images to create motion. The effect is stunning, even though it looks like an eldritch monstrosity or, even more disturbingly an illusion of 3D as they approach the cow.
