Minecraft game includes Ordnance Survey GB terrain data By Matthew Wall Technology reporter, BBC News
23 September 2013
Minecraft, the popular video game that lets you build and creating monsters, now lets you incorporate Ordnance Survey terrain data from Great Britain into your blockwork virtual world.
The game's 33 million players can build worlds atop of geographically precise landscapes that cover 224,000 sq km (86,000 sq miles) of Britain.
Joseph Braybrook, an intern at OS's Innovation Labs, created the GB Minecraft world in just two weeks.
It uses free OS OpenData products.
"We believe that we have created the most expansive Minecraft world ever built using real-world data," Graham Dunlop, OS Innovation Lab Manager.
"The map that was created demonstrates the enormous potential of Minecraft not just for geography and computer technology in schools but also for the broad range of OS OpenData applications."
Minecraft was created by Swede Markus "Notch" Persson in 2009 is a virtual world made up of cubes made of various materials, such as lava, sand, rock and sand.
Players can collaborate in the construction of shelters, making things from raw materials and fighting off various monsters.
The OS GB world contains more than 22 billion Minecraft blocks.

Once players have downloaded the map to Minecraft, they enter the 3D virtual world via OS's headquarters in Southampton and from there , they can recreate real-life features like Stonehenge or imagined structures like Hogwarts castle.
OS Terrain 50 and OS VectorMap OS VectorMap are OS map products that blend to create a 3D model overlayed with features such as woodland, water roads, and woodland.
You can design your own structures on top.
As OS is the GB's national mapping authority, its data covers the mainland and its surrounding islands but it does not include Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man or Channel Islands.
