The mistake most people make is they think they have to make the decision on what to bet then and there, when they are in the game. This can't be more further from the truth. You can completely plan out your whole strategy before you even sit down at the table. I'm sure you are realizing now that if you took the time to plan what you will do if you have X cards and an opponent bets Y, you will surely be ahead in the game.
As I've mentioned above, make sure that you stay focused. It's very common for fish to call your bets all the way down to the river. Most of the time, they won't have anything of note and you'll be happily pulling their chips towards your side of the table. However, the law of averages says that if a player continues to go all the way down to the river, he is going to hit the card that he's looking for once in a while, and you're going to be hit for a bad beat.
Your psychological strategy will involve many different things. Firstly, the image your want to present. The style you want to present. The type of player you want to pretend to be or act like. This can also involve semi-bluffing, bluffing, bullying/scare tactics, reading tells, giving off voluntary tells etc.
poker betting strategy One note of caution however. If and when people do call your "opener" raise you can put them on a long suit hand. Or at least you'll know ipso facto they are an aggressive player and you need to proceed with caution.
One of the main problems I used to have with c-bets was that I used them every single time I raised before the flop. It was just what I believed - what kind of whimp would make a raise before the flop and then check? click here didn't seem right to make a preflop raise without a continuation bet.
Just like aggression is a little counter-intuitive, that is, betting more out actually wins more back in, playing better cards can actually win you more pots.
If you are low on chips, use the all-in to your advantage if you get a monster hand. You will almost certainly get called and you might even get more than one caller so instead of doubling your money you can triple it or even better.
