Minecraft creator on Microsoft deal: "It's about my sanity'



After it was announced that Microsoft was buying Minecraft Mojang developer for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn) The Swedish developer behind the game Markus Persson - known as Notch published his own personal statement on the acquisition. Below is the entire statement.



I'm leaving Mojang



I don't think of myself as a real game developer. I make games for enjoyment and because I enjoy programming. However, I don't plan to make them huge hits. I also don't want to make a difference in the world.



Minecraft was certainly a huge success, and people are saying it's changed games. It wasn't by chance. It's flattering, and it's interesting to slowly get in the public spotlight.

It was a long time ago that I made the decision to end Minecraft development. Jens was the ideal person to take over leading the game, and I wanted to experiment with new things. At first, I was unsuccessful in my attempt to create something massive again but since I've decided to just stick to small prototypes and fun challenges, I've had so many fun working.



Although I wasn't certain how I would be able to fit in to Mojang where the work was actually done, people told me I was important for the culture, so I decided to stay.



A few weeks ago, I was suffering from a bad cold at home and the internet was abuzz with rage about me because of an EULA situation in which I did not have. I was confused. I didn't understand. I posted this frustration on Twitter.



Later, I went through the This is Phil Fish YouTube video and realized that I didn't feel as connected I thought I had with my fans. I have become an image. I do not want to be a symbol, accountable for something that I am unable to comprehend or do not want to work on, that keeps coming back to me. I'm not an entrepreneur. I'm not a chief executive officer. I'm a nerdy computer programmer who likes to have opinions on Twitter.



After the deal is concluded and signed, I'll leave Mojang to go back to web experiments and Ludum Dares. I'll probably end any project I create that gains traction.



Given that the public image of me is already a bit skewed, I don't expect to be free of negative comments by doing this, but at least now I don't have a need to read them.



I'm aware this goes against the majority of what I've spoken about in public. I don't have a solid answer to that. I also know that a lot of you have used me as a symbol of some perceived struggle. I'm not. I'm a person and I'm right there with you.



I am in love with you. All of you. Thank you for turning Minecraft into what it is today however, there are too many of you, and I'm not able to be accountable for something of this magnitude. It's Microsoft's property in a sense. It's been a part your lives for a long time, and will remain yours.



It's not about the money. It's about my sanity.
