Article content And the reaction on the internet has been mixed, with some thrilled by the idea , while others scoffing at it or pointing out that something similar has been happening for a long time on other platforms, but with superior graphics.

Really, it's hard to imagine anything more awful, anything I'd rather do than watching cartoons of people in a conference call. Call it what you will.

Article content Traci and Dave Gagnon had their wedding in the metaverse during the Labor Day weekend, The New York Times reported. The couple held their in-person wedding at a golf course in New Hampshire, but also had a wedding in the virtual world at the same time to accommodate family and friends that couldn't attend. Instead of a video conference the couple decided to let the entire ceremony be held in a virtual space. Images from the actual wedding were broadcast in the virtual one.

The reaction to the story was quick and swift, with Jezebel writing in a headline: "The Metaverse might be the most awful thing that could ever happen to weddings." The gossip website also warned that this trend could make it difficult to politely decline an unwanted invitation to a wedding.

Many Twitter users do not agree with this article's content.

One user wrote, "This was happening 20 years ago, so why is this so significant today?"

Others said that graphics in games like Second Life and World of Warcraft were more appealing fifteen years ago.

Another user on Twitter wrote "Really difficult for me to think of anything more awful, any I'd rather do instead of watching cartoons on a conference calls," "Call it whatever you want."

The idea was loved by many. "A modern wedding! Have you ever thought about an event like this? The possibilities keep growing," one wrote. Another mused about a metaverse wedding in the Eiffel Tower.

The Gagnons said that their wedding could take place in the metaverse so people could attend even if they couldn't physically. The maid of honor for Traci was still able walk Traci down the aisle. Dave's friend was also able to deliver his toast, even though he was unable to attend due to his wife's pre-existing medical issues.

The metaverse hosting the wedding was developed by Virbela the company that according to its website, "builds 3D immersive worlds for events and work learning." It works with almost all computers and does not require a VR headset.

The result was not well-liked by Gamers.

"Graphically, Metaverse looks about the same as the PlayStation 1" says an article on dexerto.com. It is a gaming news website.

Article content Many Twitter users shared photos of weddings that occurred many years ago in the multiplayer online role-playing game Final Fantasy XIV. One user wrote "Look at how gorgeous it looks."

The Gagnons chose to have their wedding in the metaverse, since their avatars had already met before meeting in person. According to The New York Times interview the couple met at a Las Vegas company event when they were both working for eXp Realty. This company is expanding into virtual work and into the metaverse.
