History - Overview of subculture w/ general information:
The Beatnik was a media stereotype prevalent from the late 1940s to the mid 1960s
displayed the more superficial aspects of the Beat Generation

- Known as the Beat Generation, they laid the philosophical foundations for a free-spirited expressionism that would evolve into the broader hippie movement in the 1960s.
- Beatniks found their home in Greenwich Village, a then-downtrodden neighborhood of New York City with low rents and an insular but welcoming community.
- The most influential effects from the Beat Generation arose from the Hippie movement from the 60's and 80's and the influence within the musical industry and rise in consumerism.
