Minecraft And NFTs

Recently, we've received some feedback from the community asking for clarification and transparency regarding Mojang Studios and Minecraft's position on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and blockchain.

While we are currently working on updating our Minecraft Usage Guidelines to provide more specific guidelines on the latest technologies, we would like to use this opportunity to share our view that integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are generally not something we would support or allow. Let's look at it more closely.

What is an NFT?

An NFT is an exclusive, non-editable digital token that is part of a blockchain and typically purchased using cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. An NFT can be used in conjunction with any type of digital asset, such as an MPEG or a GIF but the most commonly used application is currently digital art like JPEGs. An NFT is the token that indicates the owner of the original digital file. However, any digital file can be copied, moved or deleted. Minecraft servers NFTs and Blockchain have been associated with speculation. This is the reason why prices can be soaring quickly and, as we've observed, can drop quickly.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT ME

We strongly recommend that you read the following guidelines if you are a participant or creator involved in the trading selling, buying, or buying of NFTs that use Minecraft (like worlds and skins). If you don't then these changes won't affect you.

OUR POLICY ON NFTs and MINECRAFT

Our Minecraft Usage Guidelines outline how the server owner can charge users for access and that all players should have the same capabilities. These rules are in place to ensure that Minecraft remains an open community that grants everyone access to the same content. NFTs are able to create scarcity and exclusion models which are not in line with our guidelines and the purpose and spirit of Minecraft.

To ensure that Minecraft players have an enjoyable and safe experience, blockchain technology is not permitted to be integrated within our server and client applications. Neither can Minecraft in-game content such as skins, worlds, persona items, and other mods, be utilized by blockchain technology to create a precious digital asset. Our reasons are as follows.

NFT implementations have been introduced by some companies that can be connected to Minecraft world files and skin pack. NFTs and blockchain can also be integrated with Minecraft to create Minecraft collectible NFTs. This allows players to earn NFTs by performing activities on a server or earning Minecraft NFT rewards.

Each of these uses of NFTs and other blockchain technologies results in digital ownership based on scarcity and exclusion which is not in line with Minecraft values of creativity and playing together. NFTs do not encompass all members of our community and create a situation of the haves and nots. The speculative pricing and investment mentality around NFTs takes the focus away from playing the game and encourages profiteering, which is inconsistent with the long-term happiness and success of our players.

We are also concerned about third-party NFTs not being reliable and could end up costing those who purchase them. Some third-party NFT implementations are also entirely dependent on blockchain technology and could require an asset manager, who may disappear without notice. There have been instances when NFTs were sold at artificially or fraudulently price increases. We are aware that the creation process within our game is intrinsically valuable, and we strive to provide a marketplace where those values are acknowledged.

To ensure Minecraft players have a safe and enjoyable experience Blockchain technology isn't allowed to be integrated into our Minecraft client or server applications. They also cannot be used to create NFTs using any in-game content including worlds and skins, persona items, and other mods. We will also be paying close attention to how blockchain technology develops over time to ensure that these principles are not violated and determine whether it will allow for more secure experiences or other inclusive and practical applications in gaming. However, we have no plans to integrate blockchain technology into Minecraft at the moment.

We're hoping to have more information to discuss with you in the near future. In the meantime If you're interested in reading more on our guidelines they can be found here. Keep an eye out!
