Minecraft Ban Reports Investigated By Microsoft

Minecraft bans investigated by Microsoft By Kevin Rawlinson BBC News

11 March 2015

Minecraft owner Microsoft is investigating reports that the Turkish government is preparing to ban the game according to the BBC knows.

A Turkish Family and Social Policies Ministry study said the game encouraged violence, according to local media.

There were conflicting reports on what the government was planning to accomplish.

Some have suggested that it will request a court to ban the game, others that it would request Microsoft to edit the game.

Haberturk newspaper reported that the report of the ministry stated: "Although it can be considered to encourage creativity among children by letting them build farms, houses and bridges, mobs (hostile creatures) should not be killed to allow these structures to be secured. In other words the game is based on violence."

'Social isolation'

The report stated that some children might confuse Minecraft with the real world and be led to believe torturing animals isn't causing any pain, the newspaper said.

The report said it was based on the personal experience of a nine-year-old , and it suggested that playing Minecraft could cause "social isolation".

Haberturk reported that the department of legal affairs at the ministry was given the task of taking the first steps towards banning Minecraft.

According to Fatih Oke (a spokesperson for the Turkish Embassy in Washington DC), a ban is "out of the question".

Christian Science Monitor was told by Mr. Oke that there would be no ban.
games

"The game is not banned and will not be to be banned.

The Family and Social Policy Ministry isn't able to ban any product.

"I understand that this is what has been said in the Turkish media, but it is incorrect.

"The ministry can only work with complaints.

"In this case, I am told there were numerous complaints from parents about Minecraft and its influence on children.

"The ministry's mission is to raise awareness."

The government would not be able to unilaterally ban the game, but it must convince the court to make this decision.

Although Turkey isn't known for its ban on gaming on computers However, there have been a few websites that have been shut down in recent times.

Last year access to both Twitter and YouTube was temporarily shut down, while Facebook was required to block certain pages believed to be insulting the Prophet Muhammad in January this year.

'Creative freedom'

A spokesman for Mojang, which makes Minecraft under the Microsoft umbrella after the latter purchased the game for $2.5bn (PS1.68bn) in September 2014, would not speak directly about the reports.

He stated that "Minecraft is enjoyed in many ways by players of all ages."

"While many are enthralled by the creative freedom Minecraft and its tools allow however, some people prefer the opportunity to explore a world without limits and share thrilling adventures with their friends.

"We encourage players to cooperate for success regardless of whether they're building, exploring, or exploring.

"The Minecraft world can be dangerous: it's home to terrifying, genderless monsters who come out at night.

"It may be necessary for them to survive.

"If people find this level of fantasy conflict to be disturbing we would advise them to play in Creative Mode, or to enable the Peaceful setting.

"Both of these options will stop monsters from appearing in the world."
