The Strange Case Of Ferarro

We together with many of you, have been keeping an eye on the enigma surrounding one of the most prominent Paladin bloggers, Ferarro. We first did a 15 Minutes of Fame with Ferarro on May 26th. The article focused on her life as both a blogger and paladin. It also featured her experiences as an employee of Blizzard.

A few events occurred after the article was published.

First, Jagoex posted a story about Ferarro's use pictures from the website TechDarling. Ferarro claimed she was the person pictured, when in fact , she wasn't. Sarah Townsend, the author of TechDarling has said she doesn't know who Ferarro is.

The blog of Ferraro, Paladin Schmaladin, suddenly switched over to privacy mode blocking anyone from reading it who didn't have an invitation directly from Ferraro. Wow and private wow servers Her Twitter account featured the message "Stalkers are cool," and was then locked until it was taken down completely the next day. Her WoW character vanished through a possible transfer of servers and her contributions to RetPaladin.com were completely removed. Update: Since this article was published, Ferarro has once again made her blog, and thus her statement private. However, you can look at the cached version of the page.

This began raising many eyebrows and prompted lots of speculation. The speculation ended today when she posted claiming she was multiple people and, after an investigation, is now in question as well.

Ferarro initially stated that she was being targeted. But, it became so serious that Ferarro had to remove herself from the internet. It's understandable because someone's life and safety are more important than the content of a World of Warcraft Blog.

Some of the forum members believed that she felt the weight of Blizzard being thrown down on her for possibly having lied about her involvement with this company.

Others believed that it was a way to sever herself from embarrassing facts that had tarnished her reputation.

All this speculation played out on the official WoW forums (most threads have been deleted), and via the comments section over at Jagoex's website. The speculation continued until Ferarro replied to the question.

She basically said that Ferarro who we know, has been used seven times. Only one of these people writes as Ferarro at a given time and only one uses Twitter. Each time a new person is appointed to replace Ferarro everything is handed over. One exception is that the Ferarro WoW account was handed around "early" however it's currently being used by Ferarro #3. Note that sharing WoW accounts like this is in direct violation of the Terms of Service and you're subject to severe penalties, including an outright and immediate ban.

TechDarling photos of Ferarro are not real Ferarro. They were taken without TechDarling's permission.

What's real and what's not?

We've conducted an investigation, and have determined by looking at IP addresses of comments posted by Ferarro on WoW.com between July of 2008 and May 2009 that the comments all came from the same small subnet of IPs and are all geographically very close to each other. This means that "Ferarro #1" through Ferarro #7 don't live within just a few blocks of one other.

An IP address is a unique number that your internet provider provides to you whenever you connect to the internet. It was a variable often back in the past but now, if have a cable modem , it'll only change every once in a while. Every internet service provider has an IP list that they give to their customers.

The same small ISP gave out the same couple IP numbers to Ferraro during the time she claims to have been different people. Particularly, Ferarro claims that her current persona took over the blog in January 2009. However, our IP records directly contradict this statement. They directly indicate that it is the exact same Ferarro commenting here before and after this period.

Although it is possible that Ferarro #7 has been the only one who has commented here in the past two years, it seems unlikely considering her comments on her blog today. According to the blog post, the Ferarro email address is passed on to the new Ferarro owner each time. The new Ferarro even does her best to forward emails to previous Ferarros whenever appropriate.

We have clear continuity in IP addresses and email addresses that clearly disprove her claim, since all comments are linked to this email address.

What is the story behind the 15-minutes-of Fame Article we posted?

It's unfortunate that this occurred. Lisa Poisso gave Ferarro multiple opportunities to clarify, refute and expand on the information in the report, and Ferarro never took her up on those opportunities. Ferarro did not respond to questions about the photos, especially when they were directly questioned.

We have since removed the TechDarling images from the article and have added an acknowledgement at the start of the article.

What's the status of Paladin Schmaladin?

We'll need to wait and see.

It's unfortunate that things went this way. Paladin Schmaladin is a fantastic resource for Paladin and WoW players in general and it's a shame that the actions of the authors tarnish this otherwise reliable source of information.
