British Museum to be Digitally Recreated In Minecraft

British Museum to be digitally recreated in Minecraft By Joe Miller Technology Reporter

23 September 2014

The video game Minecraft will recreate the British Museum in London, complete with all its exhibits.

The project is part of the Museum of the Future scheme, which aims to expand the appeal of the institution.

Many real-life organisations have created maps within the Minecraft universe which includes Ordnance Survey and the Danish government, who seek to make children aware of their work.

Last week, Minecraft was sold to Microsoft for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

A spokesperson for the museum emphasised that the project was at "an early stage of planning", and the "build" was not yet started.

She said that the organization was looking for volunteers to help with the "construction".

The British Museum

The first national public museum in the world, founded in 1753

The most visited tourist attraction in the UK.

Nearly six million people visit the museum each year and contains eight million objects

The natural history collection was moved to South Kensington in 1880s, which would later become the Natural History Museum.

Its instantly recognized Great Court was designed by Lord Foster and is the largest covered public space in Europe.

One British Museum employee posted details of the project on the social media site Reddit soliciting volunteers to get involved.

He received a warm response from Minecraft fans across the world.

Initial stages

The first step involves digitally constructing the Great Court and facade of the building.

The museum hopes that this stage will be in place prior to the public debate titled Changing public dialogues around museum collections in the digital age. It will take place on 16 Oct.

Ed Barton, who researches gaming for the analytics firm Ovum Barton told the BBC that the British Museum's shift to Minecraft would help it be "perceived as something fun" and be an effective educational tool for a younger audience.

He said, "It's the digital version of building the British Museum using Lego." "You must build it brick by brick".

He said that the organization was to be commended for crowdsourcing the project "as it transforms it into a collaborative thing" and will further inspire young Minecraft fans.

"What an amazing idea it is to be asked to construct the Elgin Marbles in Minecraft," he said.

Those interested in contributing to the British Museum's work can register their interest on Reddit.
