Minecraft creator on Microsoft deal: "It's about my sanity'



Shortly after it was announced that Microsoft was buying Minecraft Mojang, a developer of the game, for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn) The Swedish developer behind the title Markus Persson - known as Notch released his own personal statement regarding the deal. We've reproduced it in full below:



Mojang is leaving me



I don't think of myself as a true game developer. I create games for enjoyable and because I am a gamer and I love to program, but I don't make games with the goal of them becoming massive hits I don't set out to change the world.



Minecraft definitely became a massive success, and people are telling me that it's changed games. I never intended for it to do either. It's a nice compliment, and it's interesting to see it slowly rise into the spotlight.



A long time ago, I made the choice to quit Minecraft development. Jens was the ideal person to lead the project and I was eager to try new ideas. Tecelana In the beginning, I failed in my attempt to create something big again, but since I chose to stick with small prototypes and fun challenges, I've had lots of fun at work.



I wasn't sure exactly how I would fit in Mojang where people actually did work, but when people told me that I was important to the culture, I stayed.



A few weeks ago I was suffering from a bad cold at home and the internet went wild with hate about me for a EULA situation in which I was not in. I was confused. I didn't understand. I posted this frustration on Twitter.



Later, I watched the This is Phil Fish YouTube video and realized that I didn't feel the connection I thought I did to my fans. I've become a symbol. I don't want to be a symbol. I don’t want to be responsible for something that I don’t understand. That I don't want to work on. I'm not an entrepreneur. I'm not a CEO. I'm a geeky computer programmer who likes to have opinions on Twitter.



When the deal is completed and signed, I'll leave Mojang and will return to web-based experiments and Ludum Dares. If I make something that seems to gain traction, I'll probably abandon it right away.



Given my public image which is already a bit skewed by me, I don’t expect to be capable of ignoring negative feedback, but at least I won’t be compelled to read them.



I'm aware that this is in contradiction to my previous statements spoken about in public. I'm not sure of a response to this. I am also aware that a lot of you have used me as a symbol to represent some perceived struggle. I'm not. I'm a human being and I'm struggling with you.



I am in love with you. You're all amazing. Thank you for turning Minecraft into what it has become, but there are too many of you and I'm not responsible for something this big. In one sense, it belongs to Microsoft today. It's been a part your lives for a long time and will remain yours.



It's not just about money. It's about my mental wellbeing.
