Dundee Pupils Redesign City Waterfront with Minecraft

Dundee students design city waterfront using Minecraft

5 June 2015

Dundee school pupils have submitted their ideas for the future of the city's waterfront, through the medium of Minecraft.

Primary school students have used the game for a few months to plan for the region which is currently undergoing an PS1bn renewal.

Dundee City Council and University of Dundee led the project.

The plans were judged on the look of the design, as well as the amount of support for education, tourism, and the creation of jobs.

In addition to the Minecraft Youth Camp that involves primary 6 and 7 pupils from across the city Students from nine secondary schools have been taking place in a similar Minecraft Youth Camp, funded by the university and TAYplan.

The students worked in groups with Playstation and XBox consoles. They worked with whiteboards in the classrooms and utilized them to reimagine and build their visions of the city's waterfront.

'Hugely enthusiastic'

Derek Robertson, Dundee University's school for education, stated that the game was an "huge phenomena" that was a great way to engage children.

He stated that "We must understand the digital spaces that children are using and how they affect their learning."

"Games and apps like these are a great way to get children involved in topics like design and the environment.

"The children with whom we've been working over the past months have been extremely enthusiastic and have produced an impressive amount of work. Some of it could be difficult for city planners but of course that's the great thing about Minecraft it can create anything."

Mr. Robertson was recently invited along with 49 other teachers from around the world to take part in a Minecraft Educators Summit in Los Angeles, to discuss how Minecraft can be best used in formal and informal learning.
