No NFTs In Minecraft, Mojang Says

The update starts with a brief explanation of what NFTs are, with a note about their extreme volatility, before laying out the current policies for Minecraft servers. The main goal of these policies, Mojang said, is "to ensure that Minecraft remains a community where everyone has access to the same content." NFTs however, are designed to "create models of exclusion and scarcity," which is clearly contrary to the principle. They're out.

Mojang stated that blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated into our client or server apps, nor can Minecraft in-game content such as skins, worlds, and other items be used with blockchain technology to create a rare digital asset.

The update was reportedly prompted by the fact that numerous Minecraft-related NFTs and play-to-earn servers are available, taking advantage of the gap in the official policy, and dividing the community into "the haves and the have-nots," Mojang said.

Also a matter of concern is that certain NFTs "may not be reliable and could cost the players who purchase them," which is a very polite way to put it: The non-official Minecraft NFT game Blockverse (opens in new tab) was a scam that wiped out more than $1.2 million in January, is only one of the many examples of NFT-related malfeasance (opens in a new tab) and criminality (opens in a new tab) we've witnessed over the last few years. This is particularly true for Minecraft because its players tend to skew younger than many other games, making it likely to be more vulnerable to scams.

The official Minecraft usage guidelines (opens new tab) have been updated to address the issue in greater detail. However, the main rule is: "NFTs associated any in-game content, including skins of worlds, personas or any other mods" are strictly prohibited.

Mojang stated that it will continue to keep an eye on the progress of blockchain technology to determine whether it can "enable safer experiences or other applications that are practical and inclusive in gaming," suggesting official support could be a possibility in the future. For now, though, "we have no plans of implementing blockchain technology into Minecraft."
