Tesla Disables Gaming while Driving Technology

Tesla does not allow gaming while driving feature

24 December 2021

Tesla has agreed to modify its Passenger Play feature that allowed games to be played on the touchscreen while the car is moving.

It was a result of an investigation that was launched by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

According to the agency, Tesla had informed them that a software update could disable the feature while driving.

Elon Musk's auto company was criticized for using the feature that could be dangerous.

The New York Times reported that Tesla had reached out to the NHTSA directly.

The agency announced that Passenger Play will now be locked and inoperable while the vehicle is moving.

Tesla has not made any official statements regarding the matter.

In announcing the inquiry, which was launched earlier this week, the NHTSA stated that Passenger Games "may distract the driver and increase the risk of an accident".

While the capability to play games on the car's touchscreen was targeted at drivers, and even asked the player to verify they were a passenger, there was nothing to stop a driver using it.

The feature was initially only available when the car is stationary. However, it was modified in December 2020 to allow games even when the car is moving.

The change was noticed by a Tesla owner, Vince Patton, who filed a complaint with the NHTSA declaring it to be "recklessly negligent".

In its initial inquiry, the NHTSA noted that the feature "may cause distraction for the driver and increase the chance of an accident".

The guidelines stipulate that devices in cars must be disengaged to ensure that they are not utilized by the driver "to perform distracting tasks in the course of driving".

This month, it announced that 3,142 road deaths in the year 2019 were attributed to distracted drivers.

In August, the agency launched an investigation into Tesla's Autopilot system after a dozen cars that were using the feature crashed into parked emergency vehicles.

And it is also reviewing other incidents that involve the system.
