The Third Tab is for Building Materials

Java Edition's crafting table interface.

Crafting is the process of creating tools or items, as well as blocks in Minecraft. Crafting involves moving items from an inventory to a crafting grid and arranging them according an established recipe. A crafting table can access the 3x3 grid as well as two-by-two crafting grid. You can also craft items made by the 2x2 grid on the crafting table.

2x2 Crafting grid (inventory)

3x3 Crafting grid (crafting table)

Creative, Survival Adventure, Creative, and Spectator [Java Edition only] players have always access to the 2x2 crafting grid through their inventory screen. There are a few small crafting recipes that can be made that are no more than 2x2. This includes wooden planks, sticks, tables for crafting, torches, and some recipe that are not shaped. You can create items using the 3x3 grid. To accomplish this, you need to create a crafting board made of four planks of wood and place it on the globe. Then, press the use button while facing it. This opens an interface that displays the 3x3 grid for crafting, which players can use to create any recipe for crafting in the game. There is also a recipe book where you can get all the crafting recipes.

Certain recipes don't require the ingredients to be laid out in a particular manner on the grid of crafting. These are commonly known as shapeless recipes. Players can create an unfermented spider-eye by putting its ingredients anywhere on the grid. [note 1]

On the other the other hand, many recipes have to have the ingredients in the proper positions on the grid for crafting. They are also known as shaped recipes. Shaped recipes allow ingredients to be'moved' up or down or left, right, or both. They can also be turned to the side. Minecraft server list For instance, a 3x1 recipe, like bread, could be made using the top, middle, or bottom row of the 3x3 grid. However it cannot be made using the 2x2 grid because it needs to be three items wide. Likewise, bows can be created using strings that are placed on the left side instead of on the right.

Some recipes cannot be replicated or moved in this way. These are referred to as fixed recipes. Banner recipes, for example require that dyes be placed in a certain order to achieve the desired pattern. (Bedrock Edition only) Fixed recipes can be added via data packs or mods.

Crafting is completely quiet, unlike other in-game actions such as boiling, smelting, and charming.

This wiki's shapeless recipes are marked with an intertwined pair of arrows on the graphic of the crafting table. This symbol does not appear in the game. Recipe Book[Recipe Book[

The recipe book is a feature in Minecraft that acts as a recipe book and also as a crafting guide. It lists every crafting recipe the player has tried with the help of materials.

There are many ways to organize recipes for crafting for example:

The first tab contains every unlocked recipe. The second tab contains weapons, tools and armor. The third tab is filled with building materials. The fourth tab contains food items and miscellaneous items. The fifth tab is filled with redstone items. Recipe system[System for Recipes[

Data packs for Java Edition and add-ons to Bedrock Edition can be used to modify recipes, including crafting recipes. There are currently 379 crafting recipes available as of 1.16.

Certain recipes can be animated to save space (requires JavaScript). On this wiki, shapeless recipes are identified with two intertwined arrows on the graphic of the crafting table while recipes for crafting that are fixed are identified by an exclamation point. These symbols are not visible in the game.
