After Minecraft Says No to NFTs, NFT Worlds Pledges to Create its Own Game

Mojang made waves yesterday by stating, in no uncertain terms, that NFTs are not allowed in Minecraft (opens in new tab). This is good news for gamers perhaps however, not so much for anyone who has already committed to incorporating blockchain technology into games like, for instance, NFT Worlds.

"NFT Worlds, a decentralized, fully customizable , and community driven, play-to ear gaming platform that lets world owners create unlimited metaverse experiences or games for players or communities within the worlds they control," its website (opens new tab).

"Currently using Minecraft and its vast open-source ecosystem, NFT Worlds builds on the foundation of a decade's worth of open-source development within the Minecraft community. It dramatically expands on it to create completely new types of 3D Voxel-based, decentralized gaming metaverses, backed by the Ethereum blockchain."

What this means, in essence, is that it supports custom Minecraft servers that allow players to purchase plots of virtual land and earn (and spend) cryptocurrency. It's the kind of hybrid system that Mojang's blockchain policy appears specifically designed to shut down. It certainly had an impact: The price of $WRLD (opens new tab) plummeted immediately after Mojang's announcement.

In response to Mojang's new policy, NFT Worlds has issued a statement (opens in a new tab) in which it denounces Mojang and Minecraft as having "no regard for builders, creators, and players," and vowing to create its own game to replace it.

"We're creating a new game and platform based on many of the core mechanics of Minecraft, but thanks to modernization and active development Minecraft has been missing for years," NFT Worlds said. "This is not a rewrite of an open source Minecraft clone, which likely would violate the EULA or still risk legal action, this is a complete rewrite from the ground up. The public will also be able see a brand identity change that is more friendly to players as part of this change.

The new game will have a "playstyle appearance, look, and feel" similar to Minecraft, NFT Worlds said, but will feature performance optimizations, graphics enhancements, and new mechanics that will deliver "a more accessible, affordable and enjoyable experience." It is free for all players and "completely free from the policies that Microsoft and Mojang have over Minecraft." Minecraft server list In addition it will also be backwards compatible with existing Minecraft server plugins, meaning that when it is time to change platforms creators of content will be in a position to move without much fuss and effort.

Making an improved Minecraft than Minecraft (while keeping it compatible with Minecraft) is an awfully large undertaking and one that I think could trigger immediate and thorough investigation from Microsoft, but NFT Worlds doesn't have many alternatives. Mojang has effectively shut down its business model. However, a wholesale switching to a new game could mean that existing players and the work they've accomplished so far will be lost. The only way to keep the wheels spinning is to create something that functions like Minecraft but not actually Minecraft. This is a challenging task.

In the more immediate future, NFT Worlds said it will make changes to its launcher and play pages in order to attract new players who don't want to be tied to the cryptocurrency angle. It also laid out some intense, high stakes options for the future of NFT Worlds as a battle for both the philosophical and technological soul of the internet.

NFT Worlds stated that Microsoft has stated that they will always do what is in the best interest of their shareholders and balance sheets, to the detriment of innovation, player experience, and creators. "We believe that an open, free, and evolving version of Minecraft that Minecraft brought to the world can be an improved future for developers, creators and ultimately gamers.

"We're fighting for a future with a player owned and operated economy where all participants benefit from their contributions to the ecosystem. This is a huge task.

I have contacted Microsoft to ask their opinion on the NFT Worlds plan. I will update this post if I get a response.
