The Classic Crystal Chandelier and Its Many Uses
The first use of artificial lighting was through torches and campfires. The Peking Man caves in China were discovered around 400,000 years ago, showing that fire has been around for a very long time. Primitive oil lamps were also used, and were filled with animal or vegetable fats. Hundreds of these primitive lamps have been found in the Lascaux caves, located in modern France. Today, we can find more sophisticated lamps made of petroleum, but these were far more primitive.

Backlighting and sidelighting have very different uses. Front lighting casts a flat and drab image while sidelighting produces glare at eye level. Backlighting, on the other hand, adds drama and depth to a scene or image. Indirect uplighting, also called alcove lighting, is often used for decorations and safety purposes. In the latter case, the lighting is usually fluorescent, neon, or rope light. In bespoke lighting , LED strip lighting has become a popular option for accent lighting.

The first thing to remember when designing a lighting scheme for your workspace is that the same lighting setup will not work for every situation. When you're photographing the milky way, your lighting will be vastly different than if you're shooting portraits in your home studio. Different scenarios require different kinds of lighting, so make sure to practice and experiment to find out which type of lighting works best for each. Lighting can have a profound effect on the final product.
