In the world, farmers are losing between 30-40% and 40% of their crops due to pests, diseases, and weeds.9 According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO) the losses could be doubled when crop protection strategies aren't used. The population is increasing, and 50% of today's agricultural land is in danger of becoming unusable within a matter of 40 years due to the desertification process and land degradation.10 This is leading to an increase in food security. Because of technological advancements and the use precision farming, farmers can use data to be more precise when applying glyphosate in specific areas.

It is very rare for pesticide residues are found in food items. The CFIA makes sure that farmers apply herbicides properly and work within established residue limits.16 In the rare occasion that it is detected in low levels (e.g. 1 part per billion) the amount is below the limit established by the Government of Canada, and is not a health or safety issue since it does not cause any harm to humans or animals.18

Use of glyphosate as part sustainable farming practices

Farmers utilize herbicides, such as glyphosate in integrated pest/weedmanagement methods. This means that they employ more herbicides, not just weedicides. Glyphosate has enabled them to adopt conservation tillage / no-till practices that provide long-term benefits for the soil, air, and the general environment and include:

- The reduction or elimination of plowing or tilling land

- Cut CO2 emissions

- Capturing carbon in soil

- Improving soils ' health

- Reducing water runoff and limiting erosion13
