Israel group fights over claims from the Shurat Hadin government

A group of Israeli lawyers are urging Australian survivors and their families to join its class-action program against insurance companies whose Holocaust era antecedents failed in their obligation to pay for policies held by displaced European Jews.

The database was developed as part of Israel's Project Heart between 2011 and. In coordination with the Jewish Agency for Israel the Israeli government has invited prospective applicants to participate in the restitution scheme. The program, however, was abruptly ended, leaving the registered participants in the limbo.

Shurat HaDin reached out to the government for clarification, but was not able to receive a response. Israel's Labour and Social Services Ministry claimed that Project Heart was intended to offer individuals with claims. Thus, the beneficiaries cannot be identified. One theory is Israel did not realize the tenacity and determination of European governments faced with lists of hundreds or thousands of claimants.
