Israel group fights for claims [Shurat Hadin]

AN Israeli-based legal activist group is urging Australian survivors and their descendants to join its class action campaign against insurance companies that have were unable to pay out for policies held by dislocated and killed European Jews.


Shurat Hadin nitsana darshan leitner Israeli attorney and human rights advocate Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, the founder of Shurat HaDin Israel Law Centre spoke to the AJN that the centre's project, Project Last Chance, will sue insurance companies who employed the chaos of World War II and the Shoah to deny claims to victims, survivors and their heirs.

"My mission is now to help the victims get money to pay for the final. The money is what survivors are owed, it's their cash. You can insure your possessions like your home or your life, but no one can take it away from you.

This includes many who have traceable successors in today's market who have been inherited by these companies.

Shurat Hadin Shurat HaDin is leveraging its experience in the pursuit of financial institutions such as banks harbouring the funds of terrorist groups.

"We've taken on litigation against nations, banks, and businesses which have aided or promoted the spread of terrorism. We are able to deal with large multinational banks as well as companies.

Shurat HaDin is launching a legal proceedings in Israel to unlock the database of around 140,000 Holocaust survivors and their descendants. The database was developed as part of Israel's Project Heart between 2011 and. The Israeli government and the Jewish Agency for Israel jointly invited applicants into the restitution program. But the program was abruptly discontinued, leaving those who participated in the program in the limbo.

Shurat HaDin reached out to the government to get clarifications, but was not able to get a reply. nitsana darshan leitner Israel's Labour and Social Services Ministry has confirmed that Project Heart wasn't intended to be an individual claim scheme. Claimants' details can not be released. One theory is that Israel underestimated European governments' reluctance when confronted with claims lists of hundreds upon thousands.
