GlyphosateIn the years to come, our food supply will be secure: this is why farmers utilize the herbicide glyphosate in order to grow their crops sustainably.
It's not a secret that the world's population is increasing. The world's population will grow to 9.7 billion by 2050.1 But, it's not happening on agricultural land. This causes serious issues for farmers, who need to produce enough food of high quality to supply Canadians as well as people across the globe.

Canada is the fifth largest exporter of food globally.2 As the world population increases, Canadian farmers in particular will play a significant role in providing the globe with the food that it requires. They'll have to meet an ever-increasing demand, manage pests and diseases as well as weather variations and ensure that their land remains fit for the future.

Farmers aren't able meet this growing demand on their own. Modern technology, like herbicides and glyphosate can be used to assist farmers in managing the weeds effectively and efficiently. This results in a more sustainable and stable food supply.

What exactly is Glyphosate?

グリホサート Glyphosate is an adaptable herbicide that is non-selective, and is used by farmers, land managers and gardeners across the globe for more than 40 years. It acts by blocking the enzyme that plants (in this case , unwanted weeds) need to grow. The enzymes do not exist in humans or any other animals.4 So, glyphosate poses no danger to any species when applied properly.

Glyphosate is also used in other applications that are not related to agriculture. It is utilized in municipal areas to guard the public and wildlife against harmful weeds.6 Furthermore, it's employed to stop burning and ensure the visibility of railway tracks.

More recently there's been an increased amount of focus on the use of glyphosate in our lives. Although it's essential to know what goes into our food, it is important to note that over 160 international health regulatory bodies, including Health Canada, agree that the safe use of glyphosate for humans can be carried out in a safe manner.

In helping Canadians learn about glyphosate and how it's utilized, and the crucial function it plays in the production of food and sustainable farming practices, could help ease the concerns surrounding this one of the methods farmers employ to ensure everyone has healthy, affordable, and readily available food available to us.

What is the reason to use glyphosate for agriculture?

Glyphosate-based herbicides are used in agriculture to benefit farmers, consumers as well as the environment and everybody else. This is crucial for efficient weed control, secure food supply, and environmental sustainability. Let's examine each of these benefits in more detail.

Globally farmers are losing 30-40 percent of their crops due to weeds, pests and disease.9 Without methods to protect crops the losses could increase by as much as 80% according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. This is especially devastating for farmers as the crops they grow are their main source of income.

It's clear why farmers have relied on tools all year long. The application of glyphosate to fields is a tried and tested method to keep destructive weeds out of crops particularly glyphosate-tolerant ones.

Glyphosate offers the crops a fighting chance.

Benefits for Canadians and consumers worldwide: abundant, affordable food

The population is growing , and half of the land that is used for food production in Canada is in danger of being unusable within 40 years.10 This is leading to more food insecurity. グリホサート Canadians can expect to pay less than 55% for food, if there is no technological advances in agriculture, such as the use or glyphosate.11

Foods we love would be more difficult to locate. However, thanks to the science of plants farmers will soon be able to produce more of our most-loved meals over time.

Glyphosate does more than reduce the spread of weeds. It also helps keep food prices down at the supermarket. Glyphosate also serves to aid farmers in caring for their most valuable asset, which Cherilyn Jolly Nagle from Mossbank, Saskatchewan, says is their land.

The benefits are obvious. But is glyphosate really safe?

The answer is yes. Like any pesticide, it must always be used in accordance to the directions on the label. Canada's glyphosate use regulation is controlled by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. This agency inspects crops for pesticide residue to ensure farmers use it in a safe manner. The agency also oversees the Pest Management Regulation Agency (PMRA) which offers guidelines, product submission evaluations and approvals or rejections. They are home to one of the most comprehensive evaluation processes anywhere in the world.

In addition to ensuring approved herbicides are used properly by farmers, regulatory agencies make sure that the appropriate and safe use of glyphosate continues by producers, farmers and animals to ensure that there is no risk created to the environment or other animals.

A combination of technology improvements and precision agriculture allows farmers to use data to create precise applications of glyphosate. This includes where and how much.

Glyphosate residue is rarely detected in food items. It can cause damage in the event that it is found to be within certain levels. The CFIA ensures farmers use pesticides correctly and stay within established residue limits.16 On the rare occasions that it is detected in very low amounts (e.g., 1 part per billion), it is well below the limit established by the Government of Canada, and not a health or safety issue since it does not cause any harm to humans or animals.18

Glyphosate is a component of sustainable farming practices

Farmers employ herbicides like glyphosate to manage weeds and pests in their integrated practices. This means they use more herbicides, not just weedicides. Glyphosate has allowed them to use conservation tillage or no-till methods that offer long-term benefits to soil, air and the surroundings as a whole, including:

- The reduction or removal of plowing or tilling the land

- Lower CO2 emissions

- Capturing carbon in soil

- Improving the health of soil

- Reducing water ranoff and limiting erosion13

"No pesticide regulatory agency in the world currently considers Glyphosate to be the risk of human cancer at current levels." - Health Canada (January 11, 2019, Health Canada).

More important than ever is making sure Canadian farmers have all the equipment, technology, and support they need to meet the ever-growing food requirements of a growing populace.
