Penyebab tanaman loofah menjadi berubah bentuk menjadi seperti sekarang dikarenakan dulu seorang pemilik kafe di vietnam yang bernama Nguyen Thi Hoai Mo melakukan percobaan pada tanaman loofah menggunakan cairan silikon, selain cairan silikon dia juga menggunakan bahan sinetis yang menyebabkan buah pada tanaman ini berubah seperti ini.
Karena percobaannya inilah akhirnya kafenya menjadi ramai pengunjung yang ingin melihat tanaman pemanja mata lelaki ini. Selain di vietnam dapat tumbuh di seluruh daerah tropis
buah loofah bisa memanjang hingga 30-40cm.
Kegunaan tanaman loofah:
1. Di Jawa, rebusan daun digunakan untuk uremia dan amenore.
2. Sebagai obat pencahar, kusta, dan penyakit kelamin
3 Rebusan daun untuk amenore, tapal daun untuk wasir , juice daun segar untuk konjungtivitis.
Umumnya tanaman ini digunakan sebagai spons alami karena permukaannya yang halus dan lembut, biasanya yang digunakan adalah buah dan daunnya.
