We headed towards Amed from the town of Culik. I had chosen three additional hotels or losmen for this area from the Lonely Planet Book. The same result. My first choice was a collection of bungalows called Meditasi. They offered meditation and yoga and general relaxation. Our daughter-in-law wouldn't have relaxed though. Mind you if Eileen and I ever go back that way on our own I would happily spend a night or two there.

Go last minute. Although it is risky, last-minute deals can be much cheaper than regular travel packages. Even better, you might be able to go all inclusive on something like a cruise. The agents will lose money when they sail with empty berths. You may just get a fantastic deal. Booking a week and a bit off and then taking a chance at the travel agents' definitely means you're taking a chance, but it can pay off in a big way.

Research is essential for success. It will make your job easier and more efficient. However, being able and willing to experiment is key. If all you're doing and seeing is stuff others have already done and written about, what incentive do people have to read your writings. I don't care to read about stuff that everyone else has done.

We like to stay in the beach resorts because they are family-friendly and always friendly. The Jayakarta is a favorite as we have now stayed there on two visits to Bali and are planning to stay there for our next trip in 2011. Bali beach accommodation seems to be the preferred selection in my view as this is where i prefer to stay when visiting Bali. There is always friendly people everywhere you look, we have met some of the greatest people who we now call friends and keep in regular contact with.

By car: Traffic jams can be seen in Kuta. If you plan to drive, you may want to park your car in downtown Kuta before you arrive.
