Tanaman ini berbentuk seperti yang sekarang karena dulu seorang pemilik kafe di vietnam yang bernama Nguyen Thi Hoai Mo melakukan percobaan pada tanaman loofah menggunakan cairan silikon selain cairan silikon dia juga menggunakan bahan sinetis yang menyebabkan buah pada tanaman ini berubah seperti ini.dan karena percobaannya inilah akhirnya kafenya menjadi ramai pengunjung yang ingin melihat tanaman pemanja mata lelaki ini.
Selain di vietnam tanaman ini juga dapat tumbuh di daerah dengan musim panas yang panjang.Buah loofah bisa memanjang hingga 30-40cm.umumnya tanaman ini digunakan sebagai spons alami karena permukaannya yang halus dan lembut.biasanya tanaman ini yang di gunakan adalah buah dan daunnya
