The blockchain in Bitcoin Core and other products
In a system using blockchain, when a transaction is received by a peer, the peer will add that transaction into the blockchain. Each subsequent node will then receive the blockchain state, and find that they can incorporate the transaction into their local copy of the ledger.

Blockchain-based software operates much like a distributed bank. In many ways, blockchain is more akin to a distributed version of PayPal than to a database. This is because the transactions in the blockchain contain data that cannot be altered — they are timestamped, signed, and have a proof-of-work attached — and thus cannot be altered. All copies of the blockchain on the network are stored and verified using an anti-falsification system, which means that the only acceptable blockchain is the most up-to-date one, without any intermediary. A fully verified version is available through most block explorers.

The Bitcoin protocol's similarity to electronic banking systems makes Bitcoin a good candidate for implementation on shared or private computer networks with no central point of failure. Blockchain is in wide use in systems that need to track provenance without a central point of trust, such as IP-based networks, and systems where corruption of data is difficult to detect, such as voting systems.: ch.

A number of companies and groups are experimenting with ways to leverage the technology. In March 2015, the US Department of Defense awarded a $10 million contract to Accenture to build a prototype blockchain system. In June 2016, the World Food Programme partnered with Microsoft and IBM to trace the supply chain of grain in Kenya. Blockchain can be used to capture the provenance of financial transactions using the "push of a button" as well as the transfer of stocks, bonds, art and other digital assets.

Even the World Trade Organization has expressed interest in exploring the applications of distributed ledgers like Blockchain in negotiating and settling trade disputes, thus finding a way to counter what some see as corrupt practices by some member countries.

The system is also being implemented in the banking sector as a way to keep better track of consumer payments. This includes Visa, as well as Mastercard, American Express, and J.P. Morgan.
