The blockchain
The proof-of-work system of the blockchain relies on participating mining nodes holding a current copy of the blockchain, solving a mathematical puzzle. Each participating miner has a copy of the blockchain that they are verifying, using a proof-of-work scheme to ensure that the block's hash is less than a certain target. Once the block's hash reaches the target, the block is added to the blockchain, and the miner may attempt to update their copy of the blockchain: the blockchain rules require all nodes to accept all updates before they can be made permanent.

As new bitcoins are created through mining, they are added to the blockchain as transaction outputs of the mining transactions. Block chain architecture
The nodes of a blockchain network act as both producers and consumers of its consensus network, which they aggregate and propagate using a protocol. Each node stores a complete copy of the blockchain. Their consensus protocol enables the nodes to reach agreement regarding the correct chain of transactions, which is how transactions are verified and accepted into the network.

The proof-of-work system and hashing algorithm of the bitcoin blockchain achieve this using a limited set of functions: proof-of-work is used to make it computationally difficult to produce the blocks, and the block hashing algorithm computes a hash (a digest of the block's content) that is difficult for an attacker to compute while still being easy for everyone else to verify.
