History
Genesis

In 2008, an anonymous developer (or group of developers) implemented the bitcoin software protocol and secured the network with strong cryptography. The network was accessible for mining and trading in 2009. In January 2010, it was announced that the bitcoin software had been developed, by a person or persons with the screen name Satoshi Nakamoto. The person or group has yet to be publicly identified. The name Satoshi Nakamoto is a play off the name Satoshi, which means "watermelon" in Japanese.: ch. On 31 October 2009, the genesis block was created, which means the first block of transactions on the chain. The creator of the genesis block is conventionally regarded as Satoshi Nakamoto, although at the time the name was used for an email address, the name didn't refer to any real person, and the attribution to Nakamoto was fictional. The first block creation transaction was mined by using the bitcoin client. From that block on, every transaction in the blockchain was hashed and a link to the previous block was stored in a special field in the transaction. As a result, each block in the blockchain contains a link to the previous block, and the blockchain can be seen as a list of links from the genesis block to every block that followed it. As more computing power joined the network, the difficulty of proof of work rapidly rose, limiting the rate at which new blocks could be added to the chain.: ch.

Original development (2009–2013)

On 31 October 2009, Satoshi Nakamoto, the inventor of bitcoin, created the first block of the blockchain. That first block contained only one transaction, from Nakamoto to himself. The block was accepted by the peer network on proof-of-work and was added to the blockchain. This block was accepted as the genesis block of the blockchain. Nakamoto received 50 bitcoins as reward for creating the genesis block. The blockchain began with one block, and this remains the case. Before the creation of the blockchain, the source code for the bitcoin software was held in Nakamoto's personal wallet, which he had written in 2009. Nakamoto issued a press release on 29 May 2010 in order to initiate the formal process of releasing the bitcoin source code into the public domain as free and open-source software.

Release of software

In September 2013, the original bitcoin software was released to the public, as free and open-source software, enabling anyone to review, study, and modify the software's source code. Bitcoin Core
