Block data

A block has the same structure, with versions used to store different types of metadata.

Version
A blockchain's protocol uses an increasing, chronological timestamp to group blocks into versions. Each version has a lock-time, the minimum time after the version's creation in which a block must be solved and added to the blockchain before it is considered final. The protocol groups all blocks in the longest chain in that version into a single block: the longest chain's hash is appended to the version's block header, and the version number is incremented. The lock-time lock-time prevents attacks, such as "double-spending" where a miner creates blocks with the same version number and merges them to the longest chain.

Version
Several versions of a block may be present in the blockchain. Each block is a link in the version's chain. When the protocol finds a block that meets the current version's minimum timestamp requirement, it is included in that version's block; otherwise, the chain continues to search for the next block in the version's chain.: 4,215–4,215  The timestamp is a standard unix timestamp, which is a number of seconds since 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC. This timestamp is initially set to zero on a freshly generated block. When the block is added to the longest version's chain, a version timer starts: this timer is added to the parent block's version to ensure that the parent's lock-time is greater than the child's. If the maximum time duration specified in the genesis block is exceeded, miners are allowed to increase the time until they choose to stop mining and release the block; otherwise, the unlock-time is set to zero.

The purpose of a block's version is to prevent certain attacks. For example, version 0 in the bitcoin blockchain's genesis block fixed the minimum 1-month time duration specified in the protocol's original whitepaper. This consensus rule is known as the "time lock rule" or "timelock rule".: 4,215

Version
There are ten versions of a block in the bitcoin blockchain, each version with a different timestamp.

The first four versions (or block creation epochs) are in the first 512 bytes of a block's header.

Epoch
Each version is identified by its block creation epoch (BCE), an integer since 2.1.0. The genesis block (0)
