History
Unlike electronic currencies such as the dollar, euro, and yen, bitcoin has no physical existence as a means of exchange or store of value. Bitcoin is stored as a record of ownership with individual units called bitcoins, which are issued to users with the computer code that controls their creation. The exact supply of bitcoins is not fixed.
The concept of bitcoin was created on October 31, 2008, by an unknown person using the name Satoshi Nakamoto, who published the bitcoin white paper on their website. The white paper described a new electronic cash system that relied on cryptographic proof instead of trust and was conceived as a peer-to-peer version of electronic cash. https://fflixtor.online/ On January 3, 2009, Nakamoto released the software source code for the bitcoin reference implementation, and on August 1, that year, they released the first release candidate of the bitcoin protocol.
The first network transaction was confirmed on January 3, 2009, and released on January 8, 2009. The total number of coins in existence was 50 bitcoins in total. Nakamoto mined the first block of bitcoins on January 3, 2009, and the last block of bitcoins was mined on April 9, 2012; this is a total of 1,000,000,000 bitcoins.
On August 25, 2016, the bitcoin blockchain split into two independent chains. This fork, also known as the Hard Fork, occurred because miners, developers, and businesses diverged on a new rule for handling transaction malleability. A chain's consensus rules determine how new blocks are secured to the blockchain. The divergence created two independent chains, referred to as BIP 91 (Bitcoin Improvement Proposal) and BIP 98 (BIP 9). BIP 91 was eventually approved by the majority of miners, while BIP 98 was not. Since the fork, approximately 51.7% of bitcoins are stored on the main chain, while the rest are stored on the BIP 91 fork.
As of February 13, 2013, 13% of all bitcoins had been mined.
As of April 4, 2019, 7,332,140,000, or 75% of the total supply of coins, have been produced.
