Kazakhstan Unrest won't be lessened by Erzhan Kazakhstanykhanov s Return to the Country As Deputy Chief of Staff

Following a string of protests, Kazakhstan's government now has to face an entirely new reality.

Erzhan Kazykhanov's return demonstrates the power dynamics which have shifted.

The world arena has to adapt to an increasingly assertive citizenry. In order to effectively engage with the country, the policymakers must also be aware of the changes.

Kazakhstan's Role in Ukraine's Shift
In the past several weeks the world's attention has been focused at Ukraine for the past few weeks since Russian President Vladimir Putin prepared for and launched a full-scale invasion against the sovereign nation. It was shocking that NATO leaders , including President Biden did not heed Moscow's warnings. Russian President Putin has repeatedly condemned NATO's intention to invade Russian territory.

While the actions of Putin are inexcusable and must be condemned, the west must accept that their actions have contributed to the current crisis. We are now living with the consequences of a European crises which could have been prevented and it's fair to declare.

Protests against Kazakhstan
It is important to draw comparisons with Ukraine and the current situation within the region. This article provides information about the 2003-2005 conflict and turmoil in Belarus, Kazakhstan, and other parts of Central Asia. Since Kazakhstan is an ex Soviet republic, it's seldom seen in the streets expressing discontent.

Protests began early this year in Kazakhstan over an increase in gas prices and the plight of workers. These protests grew into massive demonstrations which culminated in violent riots. Almaty suffered the most severe loss of life, with 227 killed and 9900 being detained. The Russian soldiers from the Collective Security Treaty Organization, (CSTO) were briefly deployed.

The newly elected Kazakhstan president Qasym-Zhomart Tokayev has brought several modifications to the power structures of the ruling elite that have raised questions, concerns, and discontent in the majority of Kazakhs even during periods of peace.

Particularly protesters are outraged by President Tokayev's move to assume the office of head of the government's National Security Council, replacing the previous president Nursultan Nazarbayev. His influence over the economy of the country was an issue that sparked protests.

The incident resulted in three sons of the president being removed from state companies. The nephew of the president was dismissed. Karim Masimov (the former spy chief) was arrested on charges of being a treasonous person. Alongside these officials, numerous people from the business elite associated with former President Nazarbayev are now out of posts, emigrated abroad for "extended vacations" or had hefty "donations" imposed on them.

Reform doesn't always happen in the event that government is changed or old guards are removed. It's not uncommon for those who served in the previous administration to be replaced with equally ineffective relatives and loyalists.

Erzhan Kykhanov's Application Is an Open
Erzhan Kyzykhanov's selection to the highly-influential position of Deputy Head of Staff to President Tokayev was not a good idea. Kazakh Kazykhanov was Kazakhstan's most ineffective ambassador to the United States.

Washington recognized Kazykhanov to be a cocky and insecure diplomat, a confident and uninformed with the delicate image of Kazakhstan outside the country. Kazykhanov has also been unable to make progress on matters of national interest such as the current Jackson-Vanick limits or other issues related to Kazakhstan's international reputation. Kazykhanov's performance has been disappointing.

Because of his poor reputation and his shady past, Kazykhanov is unlikely to be considered for key post. Kazykhanov lacks the skills necessary to be an assistant chief of staff.

Many of Kazakhstan's staunchest supporters have expressed concern at Kazykhanov’s frequent appearances on international news channels and exposing his flaws. Tokayev's choice to not let an unstable self-promoting, incompetent, and self-promoting deputy to enter a fragile state in such an important moment is absurd.

Tokayev's Kazakhstan reforms remind of Mikhail Gorbachev’s Perestroika as well as the Glasnost initiative in the Soviet Union. Perestroika is Mikhail Gorbachev's mid-1980s program for reforming Soviet political and economic systems. Glasnost refers specifically to the policy changes he made. The Soviet Union fell largely because of these reforms. This is exactly what Putin is seeking to bring back. Tokeyev has also developed trade relations with nations that are in close proximity to his and with the West He has been careful not to offend Putin and instead keep his unwavering support. This delicate balance might be disturbed by Kazykhanov.

In Unsteady Times The United States Should Be Watchful of Kazakhstan
Washington must be aware of the happenings in Kazakhstan in the course of the conflict within Ukraine. These events offer a glimpse of the ways in which a power shift can take place in this region of the world, regardless of whether either for the better or worse.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is a disturbing incident. The United States should take appropriate measures to fight Putin's aggressiveness. We must not forget that NATO has been pushing Russia for years, and that the current crisis is a direct result of their deficiency.

Washington should pay special attention to Kazakhstani events. This could be the next flashpoint of the conflict between Russia the West, the West and Russia.
