Almost half the world’s 7 billion people rely on meat and dairy for an essential source of protein, and it is the fastest-growing source of global food demand. As the global population increases, livestock output will have to double by mid-century to feed humanity. There are some startling facts about the production of meat and dairy.
1. The waste from cows, hogs and chickens—not grasslands, deserts, rainforests, tropical fish or other creatures—accounts for nearly half of all global sewage.
2. Cows and hogs require about 10 times more space and feed than are needed by other food animals. They are food sources for nearly 10 times more than they can support. In other words, it takes about 10 acres of grassland, sugar cane or soybeans to raise one cow for slaughter.
