Uses

Instead of relying on a trusted third party, bitcoin uses a peer-to-peer electronic cash system to verify transactions. A user can transfer a unique amount of bitcoins electronically to another party. The transfers of bitcoins are verified by the network and represented in the blockchain ledger, leaving a paper trail. This provides assurance that the funds in a bitcoin address belong to the party holding that address, and also provides verification that the funds have not been spent elsewhere.
