Transaction
A transaction can be viewed as a digitally signed message sent from a payee to a payer. The signatures contain validation code which prevents the alteration of the bitcoin transactions. Transaction amounts are not defined in bitcoin units, but are specified in satoshis (one hundred millionth of a bitcoin). The value of a satoshi is specified by the market and may change during the course of a bitcoin transaction.

Exchange

Bitcoin exchanges are a vital part of the bitcoin market and facilitators of bitcoin payments. Exchanges enable the conversion of Bitcoin into fiat currency such as US dollars and euro. In order for a bitcoin exchange to be approved by the authorities, it must verify its identity and source of funds. Exchanges are supervised and licensed by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and registered with HMRC. To date, all approved exchanges are software-only and do not physically handle or store any bitcoins.



Mining

Initially mining was done by individuals with home computing hardware. As the network grew the mining power left the individual and was divided amongst those participating in the mining. The individual, or mining pool, receives a reward in transaction fees and newly created bitcoins for verifying and validating transactions.

The total supply of 10.21 million bitcoins, and the generation rate of 22 bitcoins per day, will eventually be achieved in 2140 at approximately 4.3% per year.
