 In October 2014, a private donor funded a blockchain (immutable) to allow the tracking of digital donations to non-profits and to improve grantee transparency.
 A blockchain is a continuously growing list of records that are secured using cryptography.[92][93] A blockchain can store and manage financial contracts, documents, licenses, or any other form of data. Once data has been added to the blockchain, this data cannot be altered or deleted. Records are linked together in a chain, each node having a complete copy of the blockchain. They verify that the data matches the data in prior records. Nodes are rewarded with new tokens or other incentives when they modify the blockchain. This architecture is secure as long as honest nodes control the most network power. If a theft or compromise of network power occurs, the honest nodes can reorganize the blockchain and restore consensus by repeating the process of creating and recording transactions.[69][210]

On 7 January 2015, the Hyperledger project was launched, consisting of various open source, blockchain-based projects.[211][212] Many of the projects were adapted or derived from the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP),[213][214] itself built around the concept of accounts.[215] The major components of the SCP are:

Accounts [ edit ]

Accounts are a mechanism in the Stellar consensus protocol that maintain the balance and the transfer of assets on the network. Each account has its own balance and private key. An account can be created in one of three ways:

Using key generation through the Stellar consensus protocol. An account is created by burning a defined number of tokens in a transaction. Using wallet software such as the Stellar Core client. An account is created by acquiring tokens directly from an exchange. Receiving assets from another account. This is a two step process where first the account owner transfers a valid output of the Stellar consensus protocol to the receiving account. An account owner can generate addresses from their existing accounts.

The private key of each account is only released through an authenticated transaction in a ledger. All Stellar transactions are signed using a pair of public and private keys. The public key is shared by all the people that know the address (the recipient of the transaction), while the private key is kept secret.
